Platelet-Rich Plasma Injections for Hair Loss
About PRP Hair Restoration in Atlanta
PRP hair treatment is a minimally invasive medical hair restoration procedure using injected platelet-rich plasma taken from the patient’s own blood. The Platelet-Rich Plasma is injected directly into the patient’s scalp to provide nutrients and growth factors critical for hair health and regrowth.Â
Because PRP utilizes a patient’s own plasma, age can affect the treatment’s efficacy. Younger patients typically make higher-quality PRP, which is more likely to result in hair restoration. Patients above the age of 60, smokers, or those on medications for autoimmune disease may produce lower-quality PRP which can sometimes make the treatment less effective.
PRP injections are best for patients with a receding hairline or partial hair loss. We don’t recommend it for people who do not have any hair or have balding areas with few fine hair strands.
Preparing for Plasma Injections for Hair Loss
Patients should avoid taking any anti-inflammatory medications for at least 10 days before and after each PRP hair treatment, including:
- Aspirin
- NSAIDs
- Prednisone
- Celebrex
The Day of Your Treatment
On the morning of the PRP hair treatment, patients should shower before their appointment to ensure the scalp is clean. We will also cleanse and prep your scalp with Hibiclens, an antibacterial and antimicrobial skin cleanser, to thoroughly sanitize the treatment area.
What to Expect During PRP Hair Treatment
PRP hair treatments take approximately 30-45 minutes. To prepare the PRP injections, our medical staff will draw 1-2 vials of the patient’s platelet-rich blood. The vials are then placed into a centrifuge device that spins at 3,000 RPM for 10 minutes. This process allows the red blood cells to separate, sinking to the bottom of the vial and leaving a top layer of platelet-rich plasma. One of our medical practitioners will inject the Platelet-Rich Plasma into your scalp, with around 12 syringes needed per treatment.
While getting a PRP hair treatment is not painful, it is uncomfortable. Many patients say they feel a burning sensation — your scalp may feel sore for a couple of days after the procedure. Other patients feel little discomfort, but it varies depending on your pain tolerance.
We offer a few solutions to help make patients more comfortable during the treatment. First, we can rub a topical numbing cream onto the injection area while we prepare the PRP. We also give patients a cold air chiller that blows on the scalp, which helps reduce the burning sensation.
PRP Injections for Hair Loss Risks & Side Effects
One benefit of choosing plasma injections for hair loss is that there is little to no risk since we inject your body’s own plasma. Patients may see a little bruising in the injection area, but this should clear up in a few days.Â
PRP hair restoration is safe for patients who are pregnant, but we always recommend checking with your doctor first. Topical serums for hair loss, like Finasteride and Minoxidil, are not safe for patients who are pregnant or have young children.Â
PRP Hair Treatment Recovery & Aftercare
After a few days, any bruising or discomfort from PRP injections should subside. Avoid any hair processing, such as chemical color or straightening, for at least a week after your procedure. For most patients, it takes several months before they begin to see results from the plasma hair restoration treatment because it takes time to stimulate hair follicle growth.Â
While PRP injections effectively restore hair growth on their own, we also recommend some patients use a topical serum — made of a combination of Finasteride and Minoxidil — to aid in their hair restoration. Patients will put this serum on the affected areas every night before bed. When used in combination with PRP, it helps patients see really positive results.Â
For most patients, we recommend PRP treatments for hair loss once a month, with a total of 4 to 6 sessions. After the initial treatments, patients will come in once every 6 months for injections to help maintain their results.Â

To see positive results, we recommend between 4 to 6 PRP hair treatments for a patient who is new to PRP injections. Each session is spaced one month apart. Patients should return every 6 months for injections after the initial series of treatments to help maintain results.
While PRP hair treatment is not a permanent solution to hair loss, it does generate long-lasting results. To help maintain new hair growth, we recommend follow-ups every 6 months after your initial series of injections.
Yes, PRP injections can help improve the hair loss around the hairline and on top of the scalp in many patients.
Yes, it can. Not only do PRP injections promote hair growth, but they can also help make the new hair thicker.
We recommend avoiding exercising for a week after your PRP treatment. Sweating may irritate a healing scalp.
After PRP injections, your scalp needs time to heal. To avoid irritation, we recommend avoiding saunas, steam rooms, and swimming for at least 2 days after treatment.
Also, avoid using any hair products for at least 6 hours after your PRP injections, and avoid hair processing (chemical color or straightening) for at least a week after treatment.
In addition to being used as a hair loss treatment, PRP can be injected into the upper lip or under the eye to help smooth the fine skin in these areas. We also use PRP during microneedling treatments, rubbing it into the skin to help promote collagen and healing.
