CoolPeel CO2 in Atlanta

Gentle CO2 Laser Skin Resurfacing

What is CoolPeel CO2?

CoolPeel is the only procedure that can safely, and comfortably deliver the benefits of a traditional CO2 resurfacing treatment, minus the lengthy downtime. CO2 lasers are the gold standard in treating wrinkles, sun damage, pore size, acne scars, and other blemishes. This treatment is also safe for most skin types.

Ideal CoolPeel candidates:

  • Have visible signs of aging: Fine lines, wrinkles, sun damage or discoloration.
  • Want no downtime: Those who want effective results without the extended recovery time associated with traditional CO2 laser treatments.
  • Have realistic expectations: Understand that good things take time. Multiple sessions are needed for optimal outcomes. Anticipate it taking 3-6 months after your final session to see complete results. You may be required to pre-treat your skin if you have a history or increased risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH).
  • Are in good overall health: To ensure your body has a healthy healing response after treatment, it’s important to be in good health at the time of treatment.

How Does CoolPeel CO2 Laser Work?

The ablative CoolPeel CO2 laser delivers short pulses of precise energy which removes the superficial top layer of skin.

CoolPeel works by targeting the water present in the skin, heating the water molecules and causing thermal damage to the tissue in a precise dot pattern.

As your skin heals, it begins producing new collagen, and the damaged skin sloughs away, unveiling younger, tighter, smoother-looking skin.

By delivering high energy in extremely short pulses, CoolPeel minimizes heat damage to the surrounding skin, leading to less redness, swelling, discomfort, and downtime post-treatment than traditional CO2. That’s why it’s called CoolPeel!

What are the Risks/Side Effects?

CoolPeel is designed to minimize risks and downtime, however, there are still some potential risks and side effects to be aware of:

  • Redness and swelling: Mild redness and swelling are common immediately post-procedure, like a mild sunburn. This usually subsides within a day or two.
  • Dryness and mild peeling/flaking: Skin will become dry and feel rough, like sandpaper, as it heals. This is a normal part of the healing process and will resolve within a few days.
  • Hyperpigmentation or hypopigmentation: There is a risk of temporary changes in skin pigmentation, especially in individuals with darker skin tones. Hyperpigmentation (darkening of the skin) or hypopigmentation (lightening of the skin) can occur but are significantly less common and less severe with CoolPeel than with traditional CO2 lasers.
  • Infection: As with any skin treatment, there is a small risk of infection. Follow all post-treatment care instructions to minimize this risk.
  • Scarring: Although very rare, there’s a slight risk of scarring, particularly if the skin is not properly cared for after the procedure.
  • Itching or mild discomfort: This is temporary and can be relieved by using your post-procedure skin care as instructed.
  • Increased sensitivity: The treated skin will be more sensitive to sun exposure and certain skincare products while it’s healing. It’s important to wear an SPF 30+ sunscreen and follow all post-treatment instructions.

Preparing for CoolPeel Treaments

It’s important to prepare your skin before getting a CoolPeel laser treatment. These preparations will help ensure your skin is healthy and in the best condition to minimize any potential risks.

  • Avoid sun exposure for at least 2 weeks before your treatment
  • Avoid self-tanner/spray tan on the area being treated for 3 weeks.
  • No Accutane for 5 months.
  • Avoid medications that promote bleeding/bruising for 7 days (aspirin, ibuprofen, Motrin, Aleve, Advil, vitamin E. fish oils).
  • Avoid having other skin treatments, such as waxing, chemical peels, or laser procedures, in the weeks leading up to your treatment.
  • Avoid alcohol and smoking for at least 24 hours before your treatment.
  • 5 days before your treatment, increase your water intake. The more hydrated your skin is, the better your results will be!
  • Please arrive for your appointment with clean skin – free of makeup, lotion, or other products. Also please dress so that you’re comfortable, and so we can easily access the area to be treated (i.e. neck, chest)

What to Expect During the Procedure

A topical numbing cream will be applied to the treatment area to prevent any discomfort. Once the skin is numb, we cleanse and prep the area for treatment. Eye protection is worn to shield your eyes from the laser. During the treatment, you may feel a slight stinging or tingling sensation as the laser pulses are applied to your skin. A chiller is used to blow a continuous stream of cold air to your skin.

Patients will be sent home with post-care products and detailed post-care instructions.

Treatment Duration/Frequency

The entire CoolPeel treatment takes about 15-45 minutes, depending on what area is being treated.

We recommend a series of 4 treatments, spaced 4-6 weeks apart until the desired results are achieved.

CoolPeel Recovery & Aftercare

One of the main benefits of a CoolPeel, is that there is little to no downtime. You’ll be given a post-care kit with the skincare products you’ll use while healing.

Day 1 After Treatment

  • Expect to look and feel as if you have a sunburn, for a day or two. This shouldn’t prevent you from returning to your normal daily activities.
  • A gauze or a clean cloth moistened with cold water can be applied to the skin to help remove heat from the treatment area. Do not rub or wipe your skin.
  • Avoid exercise, sweating, excessive heat, saunas, hot tubs, etc. for 2-4 days.
  • It’s best to avoid makeup for 2 days. We recommend using a mineral makeup after day 2 until your skin is fully healed.

Day 2 – 5+

  • Your skin will feel dry and scaly, like sandpaper as it heals.
  • Avoid the use of scrubs/exfoliants for 5-10 days (or until sandpaper texture has resolved).
  • Avoid sun exposure for 2-4 weeks to reduce the risk of hyperpigmentation.
  • Use a SPF 30 or higher that contains Zinc and/or Titanium.

CoolPeel Consultations

At WIFH, we believe consultations are of utmost importance when considering a resurfacing procedure like CoolPeel. Our consultations are complimentary, and give us the opportunity to get to know patients and understand exactly what they are looking to achieve with their skin.

At the consultation, patients will meet with one of our medical aestheticians to discuss this procedure, what it can do for their skin, realistic expectations, and how to properly prepare the skin for treatment. If it’s decided that CoolPeel isn’t the appropriate procedure, then alternative treatment plans will be discussed.

CoolPeel CO2 Laser Treatment FAQs

What does CoolPeel CO2 treat?

CoolPeel can treat fine lines and wrinkles, sun damage, pigmentation issues (hyperpigmentation, age spots, uneven skin tone), acne scars, pore size, and skin texture.

Will CoolPeel affect my Botox or Fillers?

When treatments are scheduled correctly, CoolPeel should have no affect whatsoever on Botox or fillers. We recommend waiting 1-2 weeks after getting any injections before having a CoolPeel treatment and waiting 1 week after having CoolPeel before your injectable appointment.

Do CoolPeel CO2 Laser Treatments Hurt?

Pain is very subjective, but our patients all agree that CoolPeel is a relatively painless procedure. We use a topical numbing cream before the treatment, and a chiller blows cold air directly onto the skin during the treatment.

How is CoolPeel different from CO2?

Both use carbon dioxide lasers to resurface the skin but differ in their approach, downtime, and overall patient experience. Here are the key differences:

Treatment Intensity:
  • CoolPeel: Uses a fractional CO2 to deliver precise, short energy pulses that target the superficial skin layers. This minimizes damage to surrounding tissue and reduces recovery time.
  • Traditional CO2: Delivers continuous or pulsed energy, which can penetrate deeper into the skin, resulting in more extensive tissue damage and longer recovery times.
Downtime:
  • CoolPeel: Minimal downtime. Most patients experience only mild redness and possible swelling for 1-2 days. CoolPeel is designed for quick recovery, making it a great option for those with a busy schedule.
  • Traditional CO2: Typically involves significant downtime, with redness, swelling, and peeling that can last 10+ days.
Comfort:
  • CoolPeel: Considered very comfortable with only topical numbing cream.
  • Traditional CO2: May require pain management such as local anesthesia or sedation due to the higher intensity and deeper penetration of the laser.
Results:
  • CoolPeel: After just one CoolPeel treatment, you’ll notice smoother, brighter skin. However, results are cumulative, so we recommend a series of 4 sessions spaced 4 weeks apart. It takes months for our skin to produce new collagen, so you can expect to see your full CoolPeel results about 3-4 months after your last treatment.
  • Traditional CO2: More dramatic and immediate results due to deeper skin resurfacing. Effective for more advanced signs of aging (deep wrinkles, significant skin texture concerns) but comes with longer recovery times.
What Types of Skin Respond Well to the CoolPeel?

Skin showing signs of aging, such as fine lines and mild wrinkles, responds very well to the collagen stimulation effects of CoolPeel treatments. Sun-damaged skin, mild acne scars, large pores, and rough texture also respond particularly well.

Fair to medium skin tones can safely be treated because there is a lower risk of pigmentation issues. It’s possible to treat darker skin tones by pretreating the skin for 4 weeks with a skin care regimen that reduces the risk of PIH (post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation).

How Many Treatments Are Needed to See Results?

We recommend 4 sessions. Some skin types and concerns may require more sessions for optimal results from CoolPeel.

Does the CoolPeel burn?

CoolPeel is designed to minimize discomfort during treatment. You may feel a tingling sensation, but not burning. After treatment, it’s normal to feel like you have a mild sunburn. This typically subsides within a few hours to a day.
